Canned Pure Pumpkin for Diarrhea / Loose Stools

Q and A from : Ask the Pet Nurse:   ( Puppy diarrhea - tips )

Question
Hi, I've had my puppies since they were 5 weeks old because their mother did not want to nurse them anymore. I got the puppy formula from pet co and they were doing great on that. I started mixing in some soft pedigree food and they were still doing okay. Well when i completely switched to the pedigree soft food they got diarrhea and they've been having it for the past 3 days. Their brother is with my sister in-law and shes feeding him Purina one kibble and hes doing fine. Is the diarrhea caused from the pedigree soft food, or did I just switch them too early. Their brother got switched to hard food right away and hes fine. But my puppies wont eat hard food.

Answer

Hi Kimberly, Let's try soaking the dry food.  Place the dry kibble in some hot water.  After about 20 minutes the dry kibble will soak up the water.  You can add just a few teaspoons of the wet dog food into the very Wet kibble.  ( just get the excess water drained, if there is any)

Also, you can give them some Canned pure pumpkin - just mix 2 tablespoons into the dog food 1 x per day.  This will help to firm up the stool.  PURE canned pumpkin with NO added sugar.YOU can do this for 5-7 days at 1 x per day.

Also, the pups should be on a good vitamin/supplement - all our pups and adult dogs take NuVET Plus - you can buy the powder and mix it into the food daily.  GREAT for an immune system booster and for "over-all" good health.   The Pet Foods does not have enough vitamins in them.  Many of the vitamins are killed in the cooking process.
NuVET comes in a wafer or powder form.
You can't buy this at the store - needs to be ordered:  Holistic - all Natural

PUPPY Formula Recipes

Recipe for puppy formula - I don't like the kind you can find at Walmart - Want to  make it myself

I have three tiny Silkshire pups that I am trying to bottle feed. I am trying a recipe I had found on the internet to feed them, it worked before for a Chihuahua pup, but seems to be lacking something they need.
 I do not like the commerical milk you get from the Vet, for I have had problems with that before. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Puppy Formula Recipes;

 Here is a recipe for a good formula...  Call the Local Vet office if you need help with them..

Robitussin for your pet's cough / Ask your VET about this:

Puppy cough  ( Robitussin for pets)  Most Vets Refer to this dosage:
Ask your Vet about this OTC medicaiton:
From ASK The Pet Nurse's Site:

QuestionOur new pup has pneumonia.  The vet has her on Clavomax, and also tried a 7 day course of something the pharmacist likened to a Z pack for humans.  She seems to be doing great, but she has this gurgling that is not getting better.  Do they eventually expel the fluid or is there something we can do?  How long until we know she's better?
Also, she seems to urinate three or four times right in a row, and wets her crate a lot.  I'm wondering if she might have some sort of urinary issue as well, or is this normal for a pup?

Answer
Ask your vet if you can give this for the cough... JUST  give a small amount 2 x per day:
see here:
Cough Suppressant:  Robitussin DM

Robitussin Dm, Benylin Expectorant (destromethorphan) or Siltussin DM (Silarx) - Look for products containing Guaifenesin (100mg) and Dextromethorphan. While these products are not approved for veterinary use by the FDA they are common practice in the veterinary community.

Dosage:(10mg) per teaspoonful..5 to 1 mg per pound (or 1 teaspoon per 20 pounds) orally every 6 hours. The dose for Robitussin DM in small dogs is 1/2 teaspoon every 4 hours. The usual dose in large dogs is 1 teaspoonful every 4 hours.

Side effects:Number 1 side effect is sleepiness. If your dog shows other symptoms such as dry heaves and shows changes in behavior such as lethargic behavior, take your dog to the Emergency Room or veterinarian as soon as possible.

Precautions:Do not use these products with an MAO inhibitor such as Anipryl (selegiline) or Preventic Tick Collar.

Probiotics for EAR infections.....

Question
I have a pit bull and her ears have been bothering her for a while now.They itch all the time and she scratches the until they bleed.They have an awful odor and puss discharge.I called the vet and they said it was probably ear mites and to get some over the counter ear mite medication and it has not helped. I was just wondering if you had any suggestions.I also thought it might be some kind of fungus or something.But it kills me to see her shaking her head all the time and scratching them till they bleed.

Answer

Hi Tina, This pitbull kid should see a Vet for some antibiotics.
Sound like an infection to me.
You can have the vet do a quick exam and give you an RX for antibiotics.
Your dog may need pills and drops.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For the future, to help prevent Ear infections a quality dog food with No corn is very helpful.
Here is one that I have many clients using:
Probiotics - Try PEARLS - 1 x per day for 90 days -
SEE here - Sure helps to lessen the Yeast build up in the ears...
You can find this box at Walmart, Walgreen's CVS -  must be the blue box only
           also~~~~
NuVET Plus Supplement ... ( like a treat )
will help to REDUCE future ear infection and help to cure this one by lowering the inflammation.  NuVET wafers will help to increase a poor or low immune system:
Order here- YOUR pit kid will need 1 1/2 per day long term - It's a treat and Vitamin/ supplement all in one.
LEARN more about NuVET here- at my bulldog site:
HOPE this all helps you.  Good food and supplements are the Key to reduced health problems with your bullie breed.
Food - Blue Buffalo or Fromm's Gold Dog food is what I often recommend ..
Low protein diets play a role in the treatment of  kidney disease.
2 cups potato, boiled with skin
3 tablespoons chicken fat
3 calcium carbonate tablets (600 milligrams calcium)  Tums
The above recipe should feed a 30 pound dog for 1 day.
YOU will need to break up meals into 2 feedings per day.
PLAY with the feeding amounts / see what makes your dog full.
YOU can also do a few "Grain-free" treats per day ( such as NO-GRAINERS)
Veggies- Here are a few:
½ pkg. Frozen Broccoli and
( All veggies must be grated or chopped very fine to digest)
½ pkg. Frozen Carrots - steamed until crisp/tender (chop up finely)
With any new recipes- you need to work with your dog ----
Watch for hunger and feed a little bit more if needed.
