What's Good About Dog Flea Medicine-

Well, I guess it's Convenience!

You know Trifexis kills fleas and also, some family pets.  Please ask your VET for another OPTION other than Trifexis. I am warning you it may be taken off the market once it injures enough of our precious pets. So why take a chance?  ( I like to see medications on the market a few YEARS, before I recommend them to my clients)

Let's look at some other options for safer flea treatment.  ( I hate to use the word Warning, but I am very concerned )

The Spot on Treatments are a quick thoughtless process and frees up your time for other things.  YOU know the commercials. OH, how easy it is to apply.
And just look at those commercials of smiling, healthy, happy dogs there to reinforce our ignorance. One of my favorites showed a beautiful healthy dog doing something adorable. In the background you hear a sweet, caring woman's voice.
She starts with, "If you love your dog, you'll use..."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BE aware some of the Spot ON liquid treatments used 1 x per month are also sometimes dangerous and can cause burns and many other adverse reactions..
Let's talk about some of the treatments
( see heartworm treatment at the bottom of this article )
Topical dog flea treatment?
This monthly medicine to control canine fleas is far more dangerous than you think.
Yes, it's a pesticide .. Yes, a POISON....
Dog Flea Medicine is not an innocuous substance. Nor is it a medicine. It is dog poison.   YES,  a multi billion dollar industry has us fooled.
The Truth About Topical Flea Treatment
Though the chemical industry would make you believe the levels in use are not harmful, that is a fallacy.
It's true that dogs rarely drop dead right after a topical flea treatment and that's the problem. These extremely dangerous chemicals and poisons build up over time in our dog's body leaving it difficult to blame the makers of dog flea treatments.
A few long term flea med side effects include; altered thyroid hormone levels, severe skin disease, difficulty breathing, enlarged livers, seizures, and cancer.
If you think I'm overreacting, I want to bring up the past. Do you remember the pesticide DDT?  We sprayed it on food crops for years and used it for mosquito abatement. In the 1940's there were concerns which were ignored, as they were in the 1950's. After a letter was written to a woman journalist named Rachael Carson describing the death of numerous birds around a woman's property resulting from the aerial spraying of DDT to kill mosquitoes, Rachael wrote a book. When the book Silent Spring came out in 1962 and the public became outraged, DDT was (mostly) banned in the United States. (Although the makers still sell it around the world.)
While the eagle population has slowly come back, here's the clincher. Thirty years after the banning of DDT it was still found inside 55% of the United States citizens. Poisons don't die, only we do.
What should I use for flea control?
Amazon has a good price here
IF you have a flea infestation, the least toxic pesticides at the time of this writing is Imidacloprid  which is found in the regular flea control  Advantage 2
Use that nasty dog flea treatment once or twice, and only once to get a  handle on it and immediately start implementing more natural methods. ( SEE below for Natural options ) -  If you use Advantage for a month or 2 you may then be able to possibly go to more natural treatments for Fleas and Ticks --  I recommend very few products like this.. ( this is one I feel is safer than some of the others on the market )
K9 Advantix is less toxic of the pesticides offered on the market these days.
Advantage flea control spot-ons are administered to dogs, cats, rabbits and ferrets topically (directly on the skin). The Imidacloprid present in the Advantage flea medication does not enter the animal's bloodstream but merely distributes across the treated animal's skin, establishing itself within the superficial epidermis, hair follicles and sebaceous glands of the animal. The Imidacloprid is taken up into the adult flea's body during feeding and also during simple contact (i.e. the flea doesn't have to eat the insecticide to be poisoned - it just needs to touch it). Imidacloprid absorbs into the flea's body through the fine membranes located in the narrow gaps between the flea's chitonous exoskeleton segments (these thin membranes are termed intersegmental membranes).
Flea larvae in the host animal's environment become poisoned when dander (skin flakes) or flea feces (their natural diet) containing imidacloprid drop into the environment from the host animal's skin. The flea larva either consumes the Imidacloprid insecticide through actual consumption of the treated dander (or flea feces) or it takes up the insecticide via direct contact and absorption through the skin (again, no consumption is needed for the flea larva to be poisoned with imidacloprid - it just needs to make contact with the chemical). The flea larvae may also come into contact with the insecticide if the skin of the treated pet comes into direct contact with the larvae (e.g. on a pet bed).
Garlic for Dogs - I know what you are thinking!
 It's really fine.  Yes, use in moderation.
Garlic for dogs? Yes! It's antibiotic, antiviral, anti-fungal,  boosts the immune system and deters fleas. How much of this herb is right for your canine and why does it get a bad rap?
Garlic gets a lot of bad press and I don't understand why. It's been used for medicinal purposes for centuries.
I wonder if it's just one of those phenomena that spread like wildfire like, say, all pit bulls are vicious.
A Natural Flea Repellent
Between this page and the article I wrote about garlic for dogs at Dogs Naturally Magazine, there were at least 100 comments from people who have successfully used it as flea prevention for years.
Whether the smell comes through the skin just enough to chase fleas away or because it is alkalizing, the taste is just not what fleas are looking for.
How Much Garlic To Give Your Dog
A half clove a day of fresh garlic for a ten-pound dog is just right. I didn't make this up. It comes straight from the very famous Dr. Marty Goldstein, DVM in his book titled The Nature of Animal Healing.
He also notes two cloves maximum per day for a large dog is good.
NEVER use garlic powder or garlic salt from your spice cupboard. Yuck, it's too processed to do any good at all.
Garlic is also recommended in other books as well. Two examples are Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats and Diane Stein's Natural Remedy Book for Dogs & Cats.
I think some veterinarians are not comfortable recommending it because they are simply accustomed to using chemical flea preventatives and drugs.
They don't teach anything about herbs and natural cures in veterinary college.  HERBS do NOT make the Drug Companies money!  Botton Line
Another Great Garlic product is this one. Really love it.
YOU need to go to their web site to order it
